MALACO SAYS ‘YES’ TO QUARTETS;
HONORS LEGENDS WITH SIGNINGS, RELEASES

Jackson, MS. December 18, 2006-In recent years, the gospel music industry has seen a general downturn in the popularity of quartet music. Though a few groups have made headlines, most have continued to toil hard without significant notice, relying on live performances rather than record sales to get by. Malaco Records, a gospel industry icon, is stepping up to the plate and hoping to help some of the industry’s classiest acts hit a few more home runs.
In February 2007, Malaco will launch its “Yes! Quartet” campaign, following close on the heels of signing three well known gospel quartets to its label, Slim & The Supreme Angels, Spencer Taylor & The Highway QCs, and True Believers. The campaign will include the release of eight new quartet projects from the Malaco roster, using a blend of legendary artists and rising stars. These releases include the works of: The Sensational Nightingales, The Pilgrim Jubilees, The Jackson Sisters, Slim and the Supreme Angels, Spencer Taylor and the Highway QCs, and True Believers. A compilation project, Yes! Quartet will also be released as a companion to the eight CD set and includes cuts from each of them.
When asked “Why Quartets?” D.A. Johnson, Director of the Gospel Division at Malaco Records, said this, “Yes! Quartet is the beginning of a campaign to energize quartet music in the gospel industry. Malaco’s history is filled with some of the greatest legends in quartet music, such as: The Jackson Southernaires, Willie Neal Johnson, Willie Banks, The Soul Stirrers and others. Many quartets today don’t have the support of a label and With Yes! Quartet, we have begun to lead quartet music home again (to Malaco) by bringing the best to our label so they can reach their quartet fans.”
Tommy Couch, Sr., President of Malaco Music Group, joins Johnson with his remarks, “In the early days, we were first known for having the best in Quartet music and have long been known as having the best in choir music (The Mississippi Mass, The Georgia Mass). It’s seems natural to continue in that tradition by hiring one of quartet music’s leading producers, Darrell Luster (The Sensational Nightingales) to work with us on the Yes! Quartet campaign. We look forward to introducing the best in new quartet music every February, during Black History Month.”

Malaco Records will continue to announce new releases in the Yes! Quartet campaign in the weeks prior to their release in February of 2007. Watch for more news.

December 11, 2006

CAROLYN TRAYLOR OPENS 2007 TV-1 SEASON
Television Debut ‘Out The Box’

Jackson, MS. December 8, 2006-TV-One’s hit gospel music program, The Gospel of Music with Jeff Majors has aired more than three hundred episodes giving the stage to legendary artists such as Albertina Walker, Dorothy Norwood, and The Williams Brothers, providing opportunities for rising stars to broaden their horizons; one such star being Carolyn Traylor (Malaco Records).

Traylor, blazing a trail for herself with a powerful voice and show-stopping live performances likened to those of Grammy-winning soul diva Patti LaBelle, will appear on the 2007 star-studded season opener of TV-One’s The Gospel of Music with Jeff Majors in January. Other featured artists include the late Grammy nominated R & B legend, Gerald Levert in his last television performance. Check local listings for time and dates.
A favorite of program organizers and radio personalities for her powerful performances and winning persona, Traylor’s There’s A Story Behind My Praise is now recognized simply as ‘fifty-four minutes of pure gospel power.’ Producers of TV-One’s The Gospel of Music with Jeff Majors (Oliver Beach Productions) state, “Carolyn Traylor is incredibly talented. Her performance is so powerful we see stars in her future.” Indeed, many have dubbed her the ‘one to watch’ in the upcoming year.
“She’s burning up airwaves with her sophomore project 'There’s A Story Behind My Praise',” comments Tommy Couch, Sr., President of Malaco Records. “The title track has become one of the most requested songs in many major markets across the nation. Demand is so high we are servicing the single with posters to all stations with gospel formats as well as independent programmers to ensure everyone has a copy.”
Released in May of 2006, There’s a Story Behind My Praise is available in stores or from www.malaco.com.

CARAVANS PAVED THE WAY  FOR 2007 GRAMMY NOMINATION
Best Traditional Gospel Album
Paved The Way (Malaco Records)

Jackson, MS-Pun intended, The Caravans really did ‘pave the way’ for this year’s Grammy nomination of their reunion CD, Paved The Way. This recording marks the first for the group in forty years.

Released in September 2006, Paved The Way immediately hit the top ten and has been on the charts ever since (see chart at left).

The group’s legendary artists Albertina Walker, Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews and Delores Washington, have been touring the nation visiting radio stations and performing; wowing audiences with their fiery vocals and indomitable strength and spirit. The group, founded by Albertina Walker in the 1950s, helped to launch many solo careers and broke many barriers for other artists in the gospel music industry.

Melvin Williams To Release Companion 'Love' CDs

Jackson, MS-Melvin Williams of The legendary Williams Brothers, is slated to release companion ‘Love’ CDs (Crazy Like Love and Love Like Crazy) on January 23, 2007. Each CD has a love-based theme boasting the talents of many other hot gospel artists.

Crazy Like Love is a blend of traditional, contemporary, and praise & worship music with guests artists Lee Williams, Fred Hammond, Anthony Hamilton, Walter Hawkins, Stan Jones, Neal Roberson, and classical pianist, Dana Kristina-Joi. The  classic pop hit, “Jesus Is Love” (Lionel Richie and The Commodores) will be the first single serviced to radio.

Love Like Crazy crosses over into the urban market with songs that can be described as neo-soul, urban contemporary, rap, jazz, and poetry. Thematically, these cuts express love as it is reflected in everyday life and personal relationships. Guest artists include: Gerald Levert, Kirk Whalum, Irocc, Doug Williams, and Smurff & Poetry July. Again Williams digs into the vault of great pop classics, lending his signature voice to the following: “Keep On Pushing” (Curis Mayfield & The Impressions), “Too Shy To Say” (Stevie Wonder), “You Just Can’t Smile It Away” (Bill Withers), and “I Don’t Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing” (James Brown).

BLACKBERRY ADDS  TO COLLECTION SERIES

Jackson, MS-The Bolton Brothers value- priced CD, One More Time, will release January 9, 2007. Founded in 1965 as The Gospel Soul Singers, members of the group included the Bolton Brothers as well as their cousins, the Moodys and Hartfields. Joining the Blackberry Records label in 1996, their first release was Live in Mobile, followed with Live in Mobile 2.
