Malaco Headlines: Caravans Climb Billboard & Radio Charts/Carolyn Traylor Rocks Radio

CARAVANS CLIMB BILLBOARD & RADIO CHARTS

Jackson, MS-The Caravans reunion release, Paved The Way, hit the charts running and has been a mainstay since its September, 2006 release. Dorothy Norwood’s featured song, “Remembr Me,” claims the #13 spot on Billboard Charts, #11 on Music Monitor, and is at #5 on the Independent Gospel Singles charts, recognized as the biggest gainer. The Caravans are currently in Nashvile, TN to perform during the Stellar Awards celebration January 12-13, 2007.

CAROLYN TRAYLOR ROCKS GOSPEL RADIO

Jackson, TN-Release in May, 2006, There’s A Story Behind My Praise has turned into a sleeper hit for Carolyn Traylor (Malaco Records). After performing at GMWA in August, radio announcers couldn’t help but to b taken in by Traylor’s powerful delivery and delightful personality. She has continued performing live at COGIC churches and other venues, creating a memorable force to be reckoned with in the gospel music arena.
Malaco serviced gospel radio stations with a Carolyn Traylor package, which included a poster with the title track single, the first week of January. Gospel radio stations have been clamoring for more ever since. Phone lines and email boxes are jammed with requests for interviews, autographs and performances by Traylor.

At WEWO in Laurinburg, NC, Wesley Johnson couldn’t wait to get Traylor on the phone to relate a personal experience he had at the funeral of an uncle where a young girl ‘tore the roof off’ with her rendition of “There’s A Story Behind My Praise.” He didn’t know the title of the song, but had to have it somehow. Malaco’s Carolyn Traylor package showed up on his desk the next week and he called immediately to relate his story and that’s just one of them...

Remember to join us on our journey to celebrate and honor quartet music as we launch the first in a series of quartet sets during

Memorable Release:
The Caravans Paved The Way, dubbed by Billboard Magazine as one of the most memorable releases of 2006 (Deborah Evans Price, Dec. 9, 2006) hit the charts in the top ten and has remained in the top forty for sixteen weeks. The album was recently nominated for a Grammy. Reunited after forty years, these powerhouse voices have all enjoyed successful solo careers: Albertina Walker, Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews, and Delores Washington.

Carolyn Traylor’s sophomore release, There’s A Story Behind My Praise, (Malaco Records) is favored among radio programmers and in heavy rotation. Traylor makes her television debut on TV-One’s The Gospel of Music with Jeff Majors in February. The taping, held in November, also contains the last performance by famed R&B singer Gerald Levert.

SPOTLIGHT ON QUARTETS
Just Say ‘Yes! Quartet!’

The roots of gospel music run deep and are traceable to the spirituals sung by slaves in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. As American culture evolved and African Americans became more integrated in society, gospel music also underwent an evolution, reaching and growing into various forms, becoming a vital link to many of the genres of American music popular today.
One of the most important forms of gospel music is the quartet. Emerging from the evangelical churches of the south in the late 1930s, the four-part harmony quartet sound became wildly popular creating a bridge to secular music for many of its artists (Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls).
Malaco Music Group has long been known for its dedication to promoting quartet music and 2007 marks the beginning of a new emphasis on this form of music in the gospel arena. Launching its Malaco label in the seventies with The Jackson Southernaires, a group joined by Frank Williams (Founder, The Mississippi Mass Choir), Malaco became known as the home of the quartet, signing legendary groups such as Willie Banks and the Messengers, Robert Blair & The Fantastic Violinaires, and Willie Neal Johnson & The Keynotes.
With the purchase of Savoy Records, Malaco acquired the catalogs of numerous other legendary acts such as Spencer Taylor and the Highway QCs and The Davis Sisters. When Atlanta International Records also joined the growing  roster of Malaco labels, music of The Dixie Hummingbirds was added to their expansive catalog.

We at Malaco would like to invite you to join us on our journey to celebrate and honor quartet music as we launch the first in a series of quartet sets during Black History Month, February 2007. Just say, “Yes! Quartet!”
