MALACO PRESENTS THE CARAVANS

Reunion album members:
Albertina Walker, Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews, Delores Washington

Accompanist: Richard Gibbs, son of Inez Andrews, accompanist to Aretha Franklin.

Albertina Walker created a scholarship foundation for young musicians: the Albertina Walker Scholarship Foundation for the Creative and Performing Arts. The foundation helps music majors finish their second year of college.

Faith Howard, first award recipient of  Walker’s foundation, typically sings background vocals for Walker, but comes to the foreground as a guest artist on Paved The Way, sharing the mike with Walker on “He Fixed It.” Norwood and Walker also co-produced Howard’s solo debut CD.

Caravans hits recreated on Paved The Way include: “Mary Don’t You Weep” (Inez Andrews), “Lord Keep Me Day by Day” and “Show Some Sign” (Albertina Walker), “Remember Me” (The Caravans, originally sung by Cassietta George). Evelyn Turrentine-Agee guests on “No Coward Soldier.”

WALKER FOUNDATION HOLDS ANNUAL FUNDRAISER

Chicago, IL. August, 2006-Founded in 1998 by Albertina Walker, the Albertina Walker Scholarship Foundation for the Creative and Performing Arts held it’s eighth annual concert fundraiser in Illinois this past August. Artists in attendance include The Caravans (Malaco Records), Neal Roberson (Blackberry Records), Dr. Charles G. Hayes and The Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer Choir, (Icee, formerly with Savoy), Dorinda Clark (Gospocentric), Byron Cage (Gospocentric, AIR), Doc McKenzie and the Hi-Lights (New Haven, AIR, Savoy), and New Direction (Gospocentric).

The Foundation seeks to help college music students who have completed their first year of college fund their second year. Walker states, “There are thousands of young people who want to go to school and major in music who just can’t afford it. I felt that since the Lord has blessed me to make it, why not bless someone else?” Walker explains that with the glut of talented young people trying to break into the music industry today, it is important to have an education to fall back on. Her foundation has adopted two Chicago schools, the Sherwood Conservatory of Music and Olive Harvey Junior College.

Foundation efforts also include serving the community by giving concerts at nursing homes, and holding coat and food drives in preparation for winter months.
