The Los Angeles Gospel Messengers

Rev. James Cleveland organized the Los Angeles Gospel Messengers in October 1982. He assembled a group of young adults from various churches in and around the Los Angeles community. The Gospel Messengers are blessed with their own unique style and have had, from the origin, outstandingly gifted and anointed musicians and songwriters.


The L.A. Gospel Messengers celebrated their debut concert January 31, 1983. Since that time, they have recorded four albums and have traveled extensively throughout the United States. A selection from their first album (1983) was nominated for a Grammy Award. Also they were nominated for a Grammy Award in 1992 (Best Gospel Album By A Choir or Chorus) and a Soul Train Music Award (Best Gospel album 1992). They have been selectively honored to appear on several television shows (most recently the Arsenio Hall Show). They have been the recipient of many awards, i.e., "Contemporary Choir of The Year 1990 and 1991", The Los Angeles Chapter of The Gospel Music Workshop of America, Inc.. they have also performed for selected presidential/political functions. On tour in 1984, they appeared at the Jazz Festival in New Orleans, LA., they performed background selections on an album with The Temptations in 1986. They were listed #3 on the Billboard Charts with the recording of their latest album.


The Los Angeles Gospel Messengers were signally honored to have had as their founder, leader, friend, The King of gospel, Rev. James Cleveland. He generously gave of his time, energy and genius to their endeavors. The Gospel Messengers will be forever grateful for their "walk with their King".


Since his demise in February 1991, they have been "carrying on the dream". They successfully completed a East Coast Tour in October 1991, encompassing Washington, D.C., Hartford, Connecticut, New York City, N.Y., Atlantic City, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They appeared on the Stellar Awards in 1992. They toured the country again in May 1992, performing in Louisville, Kentucky, Atlanta, Georgia, Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina.


The present musician staff consists of Kurt Carr, Joey Jones, Quincy Fielding, Jr., B.J. Fears, Von Parchman and Roderick Davis.
