Jerry Smith

In 1983, Jerry Smith selected 35 members from various walks of life and formed what is known today as the Children of Israel. The group is versatile in various styles of sacred music such as hymns, quartet, traditional and contemporary gospel, spirituals, anthems, and musical dramas.

In 1988, at the invitation of David R. Curry Jr., Jerry became a founding member of the award winning Mississippi Mass Choir. As minister of music and principal pianist, it is Jerry’s distinct piano style that has given Mississippi Mass its “11 o’clock Sunday Morning” signature sound. He directed, arranged, produced and composed many of the songs that helped establish the choir as the premiere gospel aggregation in the country.

To become a part of the Mississippi Mass Choir never required that he abandon his group. Along with him came twenty members of the Children of Israel. As a matter of fact, Frank Williams, the group’s founder and record label director, promised Jerry that Malaco Records would one day record his group. On March 19, 1994 that promise became a reality when Jerry Smith & the Children of Israel completed their first recording entitled ‘I’ve Been Touched.”

In 1999, Jerry received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Jackson State University in Piano Performance. He is currently seeking a Masters degree.

Jerry has had the opportunity to perform in some of the most prestigious venues throughout the world, from the Kursall in San Sebastian, Spain, to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. His gift has also made room for him in Japan, Italy, Portugal, France, the Bahamas, and throughout the continental United States.

In December 2004, perhaps his greatest personal accomplishment came when he was asked to conduct the world renowned San Sebastian Choral Festival in San Sebastian, Spain. Jerry arranged and charted the music, as well as directed 180 youth from all over Spain, to rave reviews. He has already received invitations for three events in Europe for 2005.

Like the Children of Israel, Jerry Smith has arrived in Canaan.
