Raised by his grandmother in Farmville, NC, Calvin grew up with the sounds of gospel greats; Shirley Caesar, James Cleveland, Douglas Miller, Dorothy Norwood and Luther Barnes echoing through his household. Calvin’s own gifts as a singer began to emerge in his adolescence when at age of 18 he formed his first group, Calvin Suggs and the Gospel Ensemble.
Recording sessions with gospel luminary and childhood hero Dorothy Norwood raised Calvin’s profile as a prodigiously gifted musician, and he traveled extensively perfecting his craft. Sensing the Lord’s leading to preach, Calvin was ordained into the ministry in the late 80’s. He returned to Winston-Salem, NC, several years later to be mentored by renowned pastor and gospel music legend Shirley Caesar. Today Calvin has one of the largest radio ministry in North Carolina, being heard daily by more that 150,000 people.
Calvin’s national debut album was “Rain on Me” and its’ success kicked his singing career into high gear. The next album was “Happy”, which featured an ensemble of more than twenty of his closest friends. With a compelling urban, contemporary sound, Calvin began to make a name for himself in the gospel arena.
Explaining his turn from contemporary music to the modern quartet sound, Calvin says, “Quartets have always been my roots. That’s where I started my musical development, so there will always be a real affection for this special music”.
