Calvert McNair

Calvert "Mac" McNair's legacy and devotion to gospel music is legend. Born in 1951, the former lead singer of the Sensational Nightingales sang from the age of three until 1995, when this album was recorded six months before his May 1996 passing.

Faced with cancer, McNair wanted to perform this album expressly for his family, leaving them, and us, a gift before his homegoing. It's simply titled "I'm Free" in celebration of his everlasting life and music.

Recording since the age of 14, he first sang professionally with Willie Banks & The Messengers. But his career truly soared when he joined the Nightingales in 1983 and became their lead vocalist, and their signature sound in that era. In those halcyon years with the group, McNair led such hits as "Standing On The Promise" and "His Grace Is Sufficient".
